Pretty in Pink + SRL = Wearables
It’s nice to think how the two hobbyist worlds of sewing and electronics come together in the practice of wearables, where “Pretty in Pink” meets the “Survival Research Lab“. So, what do these distinct worlds—of physical computing geeks vs. wanna-be prom queens—have in common? 1. They are “fans” of all the gear that comes with the hobby: the books, websites, places to buy supplies/specialty materials and where to find/trade free stuff. They never miss an opportunity to add to their collection of supplies which are piled up sky high in their room/house/basement (I’ve been to your house, don’t smirk!) ready for that “one day” when it will become useful. In short, they see potential in every bit and piece that might one day create the ultimate garment/electronic thing. 2. They have the patience to read instructions: both garment fabrication and electronics building is predicated on being able to follow directions either to read a pattern or follow a circuit design. 3. They are willing to invest in figuring out which way is up/down, and when they get it wrong—because everyone does—they are the ones willing to destroy their experiment and start over without hesitation. Iterations are de rigeur in their world. It would seem the wearables hybrid of sewing/electronics is, after all, not such an unlikely chimera.
